Altoona, PA, is a city located in central Pennsylvania in Blair County. Altoona has a population of around 42,000 and is known as the tenth-largest city in Pennsylvania. In the Allegheny mountains, Altoona lies at the base of Bush Mountian.
Altoona played an important part in Pennsylvania’s railroad history. Altoona Works was one of the world’s largest railroad repair and maintenance facilities for many years.
Another important piece of railroad history in Altoona is the world-famous Horse-Shoe Curve. The Horse-Shoe Curve is an engineering marvel from the 1850s, which linked eastern Pennsylvania (Harrisburg) to the west and through the Allegheny Mountains. The four-track railroad curve in the Allegheny Mountains was built to reduce the mountain grade.
The Horse-Shoe Curve was created with human labor and was an important part of the US infrastructure during WWll, transporting troops, supplies, and war materials for the Allies. Germany even sent spies with plans to sabotage the Horse-Shoe Curve; thankfully, the plans were not carried out.
Altoona is home to the Altoona Curve baseball team, an AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates Major League Baseball team.
The Altoona Symphony Orchestra has performed beautiful music for Blair County residents since 1928.
